Best Brick Paving Patterns for Melbourne Homes in 2026

Choosing the right pattern for your brick paving makes a huge difference to the final look. Here's my guide to the most popular patterns and where each one works best.

Herringbone (90° and 45°)

Herringbone is the most popular pattern for driveways in Melbourne — and for good reason. The interlocking V-shape distributes vehicle load across multiple bricks, making it structurally superior for driveways. It also looks great and suits most home styles.

90° herringbone (laid parallel to the house) has a clean, modern feel. 45° herringbone (laid diagonally) is more traditional and creates a sense of movement.

Running Bond (Stretcher Bond)

Running bond is the standard brick wall pattern applied to paving. Simple, clean and suits contemporary homes well. Not as strong as herringbone for driveways, but excellent for patios and pathways.

Basketweave

Basketweave uses pairs of bricks alternating horizontal and vertical. It creates a textured, old-world look that suits Federation and Californian Bungalow homes perfectly. Best for patios and courtyard areas.

Stack Bond

Bricks laid in a grid pattern. Very modern and architectural. Works well with large-format pavers and contemporary homes. Not recommended for driveways as it's less structurally sound.

Which Pattern for Your Home?

  • Modern/rendered home: Running bond or stack bond with large pavers
  • Federation/Bungalow: Basketweave or herringbone in recycled brick
  • Driveway: Always herringbone for structural integrity
  • Patio/entertaining: Any pattern — pick what suits your style
