One of the most common questions I get asked is: how long will my paving last? The honest answer is โ it depends on how well it's installed, not just the material.
Brick Paving Lifespan
Properly installed brick paving with a correct sub-base, drainage and compaction can last 25โ50 years. Clay bricks are incredibly durable. The weak point is always the base โ if the prep work is done wrong, you'll see sinking and movement within 2โ5 years.
Bluestone Lifespan
Bluestone is one of the most durable paving materials available. A well-installed bluestone driveway or patio can easily last 50+ years with minimal maintenance. The stone itself doesn't deteriorate โ the only failure points are joint mortar and sub-base.
Concrete Pavers
Quality concrete pavers last 20โ30 years before they start showing significant wear. Cheaper pavers can crack within 5โ10 years, especially in driveways with heavy vehicle loads.
The Real Factor: Sub-Base Preparation
In 10 years of paving, I've seen $15,000 driveways fail in 3 years because of poor base prep, and $5,000 jobs still looking perfect after 15 years because the groundwork was done right. The base is everything.
A vehicle-rated driveway needs a minimum 150mm of compacted road base. A pedestrian path or patio needs at least 100mm. Anything less and you're rolling the dice.
Maintenance Tips for Melbourne
- Seal your paving every 3โ5 years to prevent staining and weed growth
- Clear leaf litter regularly โ decomposing leaves stain paving and retain moisture
- Address any movement or sinking early โ it only gets worse
- Pressure wash annually to keep pavers looking fresh
