Quality paving is a long-term investment — and like any investment, a little regular care goes a long way. The good news is that maintaining brick paving, bluestone and most outdoor surfaces doesn't require much time or money. Here's what I recommend to homeowners after every installation.
Brick Paving Maintenance
Regular Sweeping
Sweep your brick paving regularly to remove leaves, dirt and debris. Organic matter left sitting on brick surfaces can cause staining and encourage moss growth, particularly in shaded areas.
Weeding the Joints
Weeds in paving joints are a common nuisance. Deal with them early — once weeds establish deep root systems they can displace pavers over time. A simple weed killer applied twice a year keeps joints clean.
Re-sanding Joints
Over time, bedding sand in paving joints can wash out. If you notice gaps or loose pavers, have the joints re-sanded. This simple job restores stability and prevents water from undermining the base.
Sealing
Sealing brick paving every 3–5 years helps maintain colour, repel stains and inhibit moss growth. Use a quality penetrating sealer suited to clay bricks — avoid surface-coating sealers that can peel over time.
Bluestone Paving Maintenance
Sealing is Important
Bluestone is relatively porous and benefits significantly from sealing. Apply a quality stone sealer every 2–3 years to protect against staining and maintain the stone's appearance. This is especially important around BBQ areas and pools.
Cleaning
Clean bluestone with a mild detergent and water. Avoid acidic cleaners — vinegar and citrus-based products will etch the stone surface over time. For stubborn stains, use a pH-neutral stone cleaner.
Timber Deck Maintenance
Annual Oiling
Hardwood decks like Merbau and Spotted Gum need oiling once or twice a year to maintain their colour and protect against weathering. Clean the deck thoroughly before applying oil and allow adequate drying time.
Inspect Fixings Annually
Check decking screws and structural fixings annually. Melbourne's humidity cycling can cause timber movement — catching loose fixings early prevents bigger issues down the track.
General Tips for All Outdoor Surfaces
- Address any drainage issues promptly — standing water is the biggest enemy of any outdoor surface
- Avoid using high-pressure cleaners on paving joints — they wash out bedding sand
- Move pot plants regularly to prevent moisture build-up and staining underneath
- Deal with oil stains from vehicles immediately — they penetrate and become harder to remove over time
