Herringbone Driveway Paving Melbourne β€” Why It's the Best Pattern

If you're having a brick paver driveway installed in Melbourne and you haven't decided on a pattern yet, the answer is almost certainly herringbone. Here's why it's the standard recommendation for vehicle driveways β€” and the one case where you might choose something else.

Why Herringbone is Structurally Superior for Driveways

The V-shaped interlocking of herringbone pattern distributes load across multiple bricks simultaneously. When a vehicle wheel rolls over herringbone paving, the force is transferred horizontally across the pattern rather than pushing straight down on individual bricks or joints. This means less movement, less joint displacement and dramatically less sinking over time.

Running bond and basketweave don't offer the same interlock. They look beautiful on patios and pathways where foot traffic is the only load β€” but under regular vehicle use, they'll show more movement.

45Β° vs 90Β° Herringbone β€” What's the Difference?

45Β° herringbone (diagonal to the driveway edges) is the traditional choice. The V-shapes point diagonally across the surface, creating a more dynamic visual pattern. Cutting bricks at 45Β° to the edges requires more precision and slightly more waste. Many homeowners prefer the visual movement of 45Β°.

90Β° herringbone (parallel and perpendicular to the driveway edges) creates a cleaner, more grid-like appearance. It's slightly easier to install with less waste. Very popular for contemporary homes where a more structured aesthetic is preferred.

Both are equally strong structurally. The choice is entirely aesthetic.

What Does a Herringbone Brick Driveway Cost in Melbourne?

Standard herringbone in clay brick: $85–$150/mΒ² supply and install. A double driveway (50mΒ²) in mid-range clay brick costs approximately $5,750–$7,500. This includes sub-base preparation, bedding sand, brick laying and cleanup. Recycled brick in herringbone runs $75–$130/mΒ².

When Not to Use Herringbone

Herringbone is not always the right choice. For a feature patio where visual interest is the priority, basketweave or a custom fan pattern creates more character. For a narrow side path where the herringbone V-shapes would look busy, a simple running bond suits better. For the main vehicle driveway, however, herringbone every time.
