Oakleigh is one of the older suburbs we work in, with Victorian, Edwardian and interwar homes in the streets around Eaton Mall and the station, and post-war homes and newer townhouses further out toward Oakleigh East and Huntingdale. The older houses often have narrow side paths, low floor levels and front gardens where bluestone, red brick or recycled brick suits the house far better than plain concrete.
Because many Oakleigh homes sit low, with floors close to ground level, water management is critical. Paving has to fall away from the house, and on a lot of older blocks the existing drainage is either missing or blocked.
