Drainage is part of every paving job

Most paving problems start with water. Paving that falls toward the house, a downpipe emptying onto the surface, or a low spot with nowhere to drain will eventually cause pooling, slippery algae, sinking pavers or water in the garage. On Melbourne's reactive clay soils, water sitting beside the house can also affect footings. That's why we plan drainage on the first site visit and price it clearly, instead of improvising on the day.

What we build

Stormwater connections and plumbing

In Victoria, connecting new drains into a property's stormwater system is regulated plumbing work that must be done by a registered plumber, and water must go to the property's legal point of discharge. We design the surface drainage with the paving, and the stormwater connection is completed by a registered plumber — either coordinated as part of the job or by your own plumber. We'll explain exactly who does what on the quote.

How a drainage and paving job runs

  1. Site visit: we look at where water comes from (roof, neighbours, slope) and where it can legally go.
  2. We set levels with a laser and mark falls, drain lines and pit locations.
  3. Excavation and base preparation, with trenches for drains and pits.
  4. Drains and pits installed; connections to stormwater completed by a registered plumber where required.
  5. Paving laid to the planned falls, with grates finished flush and neat.
  6. A final water test so you can see the paving drain before we leave.

Driveways and garages

Driveways that fall toward the garage are the classic problem. A grated strip drain across the garage entry, connected to stormwater, stops water running in. On sloping driveways we also add a drain at the bottom and make sure the driveway surface itself has a slight cross-fall so water doesn't concentrate in one spot.

Courtyards and low spots

Enclosed courtyards often rely on one pit. We check the pit and its connection first, then set the paving with an even fall toward it. Where a courtyard has no outlet at all, a new pit and a plumber-connected line are usually needed.

Behind retaining walls

Water building up behind a retaining wall pushes it over time. We install ag drains wrapped in geotextile with free-draining gravel behind new walls, and on existing walls we can often add drainage when the adjoining paving is redone.

Permeable paving as a drainage solution

In some yards the best answer is to let water soak in. Permeable pavers over an open-graded base store rainwater and release it slowly into the ground, reducing runoff and puddles. It suits driveways and paths away from the house, and some developments use it to meet stormwater requirements.

Common Questions

Drainage & Stormwater Melbourne — FAQs

Do you connect drains to the stormwater system?

Stormwater connections in Victoria must be done by a registered plumber. We design the drainage with the paving and the connection is completed by a registered plumber, coordinated with the job or by your own plumber.

How much does a strip drain cost?

Drainage is quoted after a site visit — the length, grate, depth and access all change the price.

Can you fix water pooling on existing paving?

Often, yes — by adding a strip drain or pit, or by relaying the affected area with correct falls. We'll recommend the simplest fix that works.

Where can the water go?

To the property's legal point of discharge, usually the existing stormwater drain. It can't be directed onto a neighbour's property.
