Porcelain Paving Melbourne — Melbourne's South-East

Porcelain paving has surged in popularity for Melbourne alfresco areas and patios over the last few years. The appeal is obvious — it looks stunning, requires virtually no maintenance (no sealing, no oiling), and comes in large formats that give outdoor areas a clean, contemporary feel.

We work with 600×600mm, 600×900mm and 900×900mm porcelain tiles for outdoor use. All outdoor porcelain we install has a textured anti-slip surface — we won't install polished indoor-grade porcelain in outdoor applications, which is a mistake we see from inexperienced contractors.

The key to a good porcelain installation is the base. Porcelain has zero flex tolerance — any movement in the base will crack the tiles. We use a full mortar bed (not sand-set) with the correct adhesive for outdoor use, and properly control-joint the installation to manage thermal expansion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is porcelain paving slippery when wet?

Outdoor porcelain tiles should have a textured surface with an R10 or R11 slip rating. We only source and install outdoor-rated porcelain with the correct anti-slip finish. Never use polished or glazed porcelain outdoors — it becomes dangerously slippery when wet.

Does porcelain crack easily?

Porcelain itself is very strong, but it has no flex tolerance. The base must be absolutely solid — full mortar bed, no soft spots. We see many cracked porcelain jobs from contractors who cut corners on base preparation. Our installations are done correctly from the sub-base up.

How do you clean porcelain paving?

Porcelain is one of the easiest surfaces to maintain — a simple wash with water and mild detergent is all you need. No sealing required, ever. Porcelain doesn't stain, doesn't absorb water, and doesn't need oiling like natural stone.
