What is exposed aggregate?

Exposed aggregate is concrete with decorative stones mixed through it. After the pour, the top layer of cement paste is washed away to reveal the stones, giving a textured, natural-stone look that's non-slip and very durable. It's one of the most popular driveway finishes in Melbourne because it hides tyre marks, oil spots and hairline cracks far better than plain grey concrete.

Why homeowners choose it

How we build an exposed aggregate driveway

  1. Break out and remove the old driveway, and excavate to depth.
  2. Place and compact a crushed-rock base in layers — deeper on reactive clay and for heavier vehicles.
  3. Set formwork, levels and falls so water runs to the street or a grated drain, not the garage.
  4. Place reinforcement mesh on bar chairs so it sits in the right part of the slab.
  5. Pour and finish the concrete, then wash off the surface paste at the right moment to expose the stones.
  6. Saw-cut control joints so any movement cracks in straight, planned lines.
  7. Cure the slab, clean it and apply a penetrating sealer.

Built for Melbourne clay

Most of the south-east and east sits on reactive clay that swells in winter and shrinks in summer. That movement is what cracks so many old driveways. A deeper compacted base, correct reinforcement, properly spaced control joints and good drainage are what keep an exposed aggregate driveway looking right for decades.

Exposed aggregate vs pavers

Exposed aggregate ($145–$210/m²) gives a seamless, textured slab. Paved driveways ($140–$220/m²) and brick driveways ($150–$250/m²) are made of individual units that can be lifted and relaid if a section settles or needs plumbing access. Both are excellent choices; we'll show you both on the site visit. See our driveway paving and concrete driveways pages.

Choosing a stone blend

Grey and charcoal blends suit modern rendered homes; warmer brown and cream blends suit brick and weatherboard homes. We bring samples to the site visit so you can see them against your house, and we recommend a sealer that brings out the colour without making the surface slippery.

Where we build exposed aggregate

We build exposed aggregate driveways, paths and patios across Melbourne's east, inner east, south-east & bayside, including Notting Hill, Clayton, Wheelers Hill, Malvern East, Malvern, Murrumbeena, Cheltenham, Hampton, Springvale, Keysborough and Knoxfield. Antonio quotes, plans and oversees every job personally, working with the same trusted crew on every project.

Council and crossovers

Replacing the driveway on your own land usually doesn't need a permit, but changes to the vehicle crossing between the footpath and the road need a council permit, and stormwater must go to the legal point of discharge. We'll tell you what applies on the site visit.

Common Questions

Exposed Aggregate Driveways Melbourne — FAQs

How much does an exposed aggregate driveway cost in Melbourne?

Typically $145–$210/m² supplied and laid (inc GST); a 40m² driveway is about $5,800–$8,400.

Is exposed aggregate slippery?

No — the exposed stones give a textured, non-slip surface. We use a sealer that keeps the grip.

Does exposed aggregate crack?

Any concrete can crack on reactive clay, but a deep base, reinforcement and saw-cut control joints keep cracking in planned lines, and the texture hides hairline cracks.

How often does it need sealing?

Usually every three to five years, depending on sun and traffic.
