Antonio completed our bluestone paving in Hampton and the result is outstanding. The levels, drainage and finishing details are flawless. Highly recommended for high-end paving.
We had a fairly complicated drainage issue on the site, but Antonio came up with a solution and executed it perfectly. The workmanship was top quality, and there were no unexpected surprises along the way.

Antonio and his colleague did a great job with our backyard brick laying. Easy to deal with, on time and professional.
Antonio just completed some brick paving alongside our front fence. The paving looks fabulous and was completed in 2 days. He was reliable and the work was completed to a high standard.
Antonio cleared out our small backyard, laid some pavers and built a step around our existing deck. He was quick to respond, well priced, and was happy to change and vary the scope of works as needed.
Wheelers Hill was mostly developed in the late 1970s and 1980s, and it shows: wider frontages, double garages, and backyards with room for a pool and a proper entertaining area. Many of those original concrete driveways and pool surrounds are now forty-plus years old. Owners here tend to replace them with something that suits the house and lasts — bluestone, travertine or porcelain around the pool, and brick paver or exposed aggregate driveways out the front.
The name gives it away: a lot of Wheelers Hill streets, especially around Jells Park and the Police Road end, have real slope. Water runs downhill across paving and toward houses unless it's told otherwise. We set falls on every job and add strip drains or grated channels where a driveway or patio meets the house or garage. Underneath, the clay soil is reactive, so the base is dug deeper and compacted in layers to stop the movement you see in so many old driveways here.
Pool surround renovations are one of the most common jobs we quote here, usually replacing old concrete or pebble finishes with travertine or porcelain and new coping. Large alfresco areas that connect the house, pool and lawn come next, followed by driveway replacements and retaining walls where an old sleeper wall has started to lean. Because the blocks are larger, we often stage the work so part of the yard stays usable while the rest is being done.
Wheelers Hill is in the City of Monash. Changes to the vehicle crossing need a council permit, and pool areas have to keep the pool barrier compliant during and after the work — we plan around the existing fence and gate so you're never left with an unsafe pool. Where retaining walls are over the height council or the building regulations allow without a permit, we'll tell you upfront.
Wheelers Hill is a short drive from our Notting Hill base. Antonio quotes every job himself, writes down exactly what's included — excavation depth, base, material, drainage, clean-up — and oversees the work with the same trusted crew. One of our Google reviews is from a Wheelers Hill garden clean-up client; most of our work here is pool and driveway paving.
Wheelers Hill homes are mostly solid brick with tiled roofs and wide frontages, so the paving has a lot of visual weight. Sawn bluestone and charcoal pavers look sharp against cream or red brick; travertine and pale porcelain lighten up the back around a pool. For long driveways, a border in a contrasting colour breaks up the area and hides tyre marks. We'll show you options on site and explain the trade-offs in cost and upkeep.
A pool surround is usually 30–50m² once the path to the house is included. At $200–$320/m² (inc GST) that's roughly $6,000–$16,000 depending on the stone, coping and how much of the old surround and base needs to come out. We quote coping, drainage and any barrier adjustments separately so you can see exactly where the money goes.
If your job involves the pool, note the age of the surround and whether any coping is loose or drummy. For driveways, tell us whether a caravan, boat or trailer will park on it. Photos sent to 0406 170 544 help Antonio plan the site visit and bring the right samples.
Wheelers Hill (3150) is in the City of Monash. The jobs we quote most here are pool surround renovations, large alfresco areas, driveways and retaining walls. The ground is mostly reactive clay, so a deep, compacted crushed-rock base and planned falls are non-negotiable. Every quote is free, written and fixed after Antonio has measured up on site, and we also work in nearby Glen Waverley, Mulgrave and Knoxfield.
Wheelers Hill has large 1970s–90s family homes on hilly streets near Jells Park, many with views. Bluestone is ideal for steps and entries on the slopes, and travertine suits big entertaining areas and pools. Typical Wheelers Hill jobs include a bluestone front path and step, a travertine alfresco off the kitchen, or both stones together around a pool. Bluestone is a dense Victorian basalt that wears slowly and looks better with age. Travertine is a softer-coloured natural stone that stays cooler underfoot in summer. Both stones are laid on a compacted crushed-rock base with the right falls, so water runs away from the house and the stone stays level. If you'd rather skip sealing, porcelain gives a similar look with almost no maintenance. The price is fixed and written after a free site visit. Bluestone paving is $190–$300/m² and travertine $180–$280/m² including GST, fully installed with excavation, base and clean-up. See our bluestone and travertine pages for finishes and photos.
Wheelers Hill's hills and clay send runoff quickly down wide driveways. Permeable paving slows it and helps rain soak into the ground. A permeable driveway in Wheelers Hill uses pavers with wider joints filled with fine gravel, laid over an open-graded base, so rain passes through the surface instead of running off. Driveway stormwater has to reach the legal point of discharge for your block, which the City of Monash can confirm, and any new or wider crossover needs a council permit. For new homes and units, Victorian planning rules also expect at least 20% of the site to be left permeable, and permeable pavers can help meet that. On clay we lay a deeper open-graded base that stores rain and releases it slowly, with an overflow to the drain for heavy storms. It handles cars and bins like any paved driveway; the only upkeep is keeping leaves and silt out of the joints. Permeable paving is $150–$220/m² including GST, fully installed with the open-graded base. Read more about permeable paving in Melbourne.
On Wheelers Hill's slopes, wide driveways often develop dips and spreading edges. We rebuild the base, restrain the edges and re-lay the pavers. We fix sunken pavers, tree-root lifting, rocking pavers, spreading edges, broken pavers and joints that have lost their sand. We find the cause first — a weak base, water from a downpipe, roots or missing edges — then lift the affected pavers, rebuild the base and put the same pavers back. Small problems grow: once water gets under the pavers, the dip spreads. Fixing a Wheelers Hill path or driveway early keeps the repair small and the cost down. Every repair comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty, written into your quote. Re-laying existing pavers costs $90–$150/m² including GST, with a $1,000 minimum job — usually much less than new paving, because your existing pavers are reused. Text photos to 0406 170 544 for a quick price range, or see our paver repairs page. We also fix paving in Glen Waverley and Mulgrave.
Many Wheelers Hill blocks have a change in level somewhere — a sloping backyard, a raised garden bed or a driveway cut into the slope — and a retaining wall is what makes the paving around it work. We build timber sleeper, concrete sleeper, block and stone-faced walls with ag drains and free-draining gravel behind them, because water pressure is what pushes walls over. Most of Wheelers Hill is on reactive clay that swells in winter and shrinks in summer, so the base depth and compaction make or break the job. In Victoria, retaining walls over 1 metre high, or walls close to a boundary or building, generally need a building permit — we'll tell you if yours does. Every retaining wall is quoted after a free site visit, often together with the paving. See retaining walls.
Exposed aggregate is a popular choice for Wheelers Hill driveways and paths: the washed stone surface hides tyre marks, gives good grip and suits both older and new homes. Most of Wheelers Hill is on reactive clay that swells in winter and shrinks in summer, so the base depth and compaction make or break the job. We pour on a compacted crushed-rock base with reinforcing mesh, cut control joints so cracking happens where it's meant to, and seal the finish. Exposed aggregate costs $145–$210/m² and plain or coloured concrete driveways $90–$210/m² including GST. If you'd rather have a driveway that can be lifted and repaired later, pavers from $140/m² are worth comparing — we'll quote both. See exposed aggregate driveways.
Yes — sleeper, concrete sleeper and block retaining walls with proper footings and drainage, often built together with new paving. Retaining walls are quoted after a site visit; see our retaining walls page.
Most paving jobs in Wheelers Hill cost $150–$300/m² including GST, depending on material — brick from $150/m², bluestone from $190/m² and pool paving from $200/m². Every quote is free and provided in writing after an on-site measure-up.
Yes. We remove the old surround, check and repair the base, and lay non-slip travertine, porcelain or bluestone with new coping. We keep the pool barrier compliant throughout the job.
Often, yes — especially when a new patio or driveway changes the ground level. We'll show you where a wall is needed and whether it needs a permit before you commit.
Paved driveways are $140–$220/m² and exposed aggregate concrete $145–$210/m² (inc GST). Larger Wheelers Hill driveways are often 50–70m², so we measure on site and give a written fixed price.
