Coping is the edge that caps the pool wall. It protects the top of the shell, gives a safe edge to sit on and grip, and directs splash water away from the pool. Old concrete or pebble coping often cracks, lifts or goes drummy, and loose coping is a safety risk. Replacing it — usually together with the pool surround — is one of the most common pool upgrades we do in Melbourne.
Good coping comes down to details: a consistent overhang over the waterline, a slight fall away from the pool so splash water doesn't run back in, neat mitred or cut corners, even joints, and a bond to the pool beam that won't let go. We protect the pool shell during removal, check the beam for damage, and set each piece on a full mortar bed.
Bullnose coping has a rounded edge that's comfortable to sit on and kind to hands and feet. Drop-face coping shows a thicker edge for a solid, contemporary look. Square-edge coping suits modern pools with a crisp line. We'll show you samples and explain how each one looks with your tiles and surround.
When old coping comes off, the top of the pool beam is sometimes cracked or uneven. We repair and level it before new coping goes on, because coping laid on a damaged beam won't stay put. If the beam needs structural repair, we'll tell you before going further.
Natural stone coping — travertine and bluestone — should be sealed with a product suitable for pool water and resealed every few years. Porcelain needs no sealing. Rinse coping regularly to remove salt and chlorine residue, especially on saltwater pools.
Coping and surround work best as one design. We set the coping first, then lay the surround so its falls lead away from the pool and toward drains or garden beds, with an expansion joint between the coping and the paving so movement in one doesn't crack the other. Carrying the same stone through gives a clean, resort-style finish; a contrasting coping in bluestone around a pale travertine surround is another popular look in Melbourne backyards.
Saltwater pools are hard on some stones. Dense, well-sealed travertine, sawn bluestone and porcelain handle salt well; softer limestones can erode over time. We'll recommend a material and sealer to suit your pool's sanitiser so the coping keeps its surface and colour.
For new pools we coordinate with the pool builder so the coping and surround go on at the right stage. For existing pools, coping replacement is usually done with a surround renovation so levels, materials and drainage all match.

Pool barriers must stay compliant while work is underway. We plan around the existing fence and gates and use temporary fencing if a section has to come out, so your pool is never left unsafe.
