Pool Paving That's Safe, Beautiful and Built to Last
Pool paving is one of the most important outdoor decisions you'll make. It needs to be non-slip when wet, resistant to pool chemicals and chlorine, handle Melbourne's UV without fading, and look stunning every day of the year. The wrong material or a poor installation creates safety risks and expensive problems.
Antonio PrimeScape Construction specialises in pool surrounds and coping using the materials best suited to Melbourne's conditions — travertine, bluestone, sandstone and exterior-rated porcelain. Every pool paving project is completed with correct drainage fall away from the pool, proper coping installation, and a finish that stands up to decades of Melbourne summers.
Pool Paving Materials
Melbourne's most popular pool paving choice. Stays cool underfoot in summer — critical for bare feet. Tumbled or brushed finish provides excellent wet grip. Warm cream and honey tones suit any pool style.
Premium Melbourne pool paving. Natural cleft bluestone provides excellent wet-weather grip. Deep charcoal tones contrast beautifully with pool water. Extremely durable — doesn't fade or degrade.
Warm natural tones, excellent texture for grip when wet. Popular for resort-style pool areas. Requires sealing annually to protect from pool chemical staining.
Zero maintenance option — no sealing, chemical-resistant, UV-stable. Anti-slip R11 rated porcelain is fully pool-safe. Contemporary look with consistent colour and finish.
Pool Paving vs Pool Coping — What's the Difference?
The stone or paver that caps the pool edge — the bullnose or drop-face piece that the pool water laps against. Critical for waterproofing and aesthetics. Available in all stone types. Priced per linear metre.
The paved area around the pool — the surface you walk on, place sun loungers, and where water splashes constantly. Must be non-slip, chemical-resistant and properly drained. Priced per square metre.
Pool Paving Cost Melbourne
A standard pool surround (40–60m²) costs approximately $4,800–$13,200 supply and install. Coping on a standard rectangular pool (20–25lm) costs approximately $1,700–$4,000. Contact Antonio for a free itemised quote.

What Makes a Safe Pool Surround?
- Non-slip rating — Pool paving must have minimum R10 slip resistance when wet. Travertine tumbled, bluestone natural cleft and porcelain R11 all meet this standard.
- Chemical resistance — Pool chemicals and chlorine must not stain or degrade the surface. Bluestone and porcelain are naturally resistant. Sandstone and travertine require sealing for protection.
- Drainage fall — The surround must drain away from the pool at the correct grade. Water pooling on the surround creates algae and slip hazards.
- Heat performance — Dark surfaces absorb more heat. Travertine and light sandstone stay significantly cooler underfoot than dark concrete or dark bluestone in Melbourne summers.
- Correct installation — Pool paving must be installed on a waterproofed substrate with the right adhesive or mortar. Antonio advises on the correct specification for each material and pool type.
For most Melbourne pools, travertine tumbled finish is the best combination of safety, aesthetics and value. It stays cool in summer, grips well when wet, looks beautiful and costs less than bluestone. For a truly premium result — bluestone natural cleft with travertine coping is a standout combination that photographs beautifully and lasts a lifetime.
