Sandstone gives a warm, natural finish that suits everything from 1970s brick homes in Glen Waverley and Doncaster to period houses in Camberwell, Balwyn and Surrey Hills. It's softer in colour than bluestone and stays cooler underfoot in summer, which makes it a favourite for patios, garden paths and pool surrounds.
Sawn sandstone has a smooth, even face and clean edges for a tidy, contemporary look. Honed sandstone is ground smoother for a refined finish. Natural cleft (riven) sandstone keeps the stone's layered texture and grip, and suits period homes and informal gardens. Tumbled sandstone has softened edges for a relaxed, aged look. Around pools we recommend a textured finish for grip.
Most of the eastern suburbs sit on reactive clay, so sandstone needs a compacted crushed-rock base and, for larger or thinner pavers, a full mortar bed so the stone is supported edge to edge. Falls are set away from the house and toward drains or garden beds. Sandstone is porous, so we seal it after laying to reduce staining and moss, and recommend resealing every few years.

It depends on the job. Stone laid on a mortar bed — crazy paving, and bluestone or travertine around pools and patios — usually gets grouted joints, which are firm and easy to keep clean. Pavers laid on a compacted sand and crushed-rock base, like brick and concrete pavers on driveways and paths, get polymeric sand, which sets firm, stays slightly flexible and helps keep weeds and ants out. We recommend the right one for your area on the site visit.
