Porcelain paving has become one of the most talked-about outdoor paving options in Melbourne over the last few years. Here's an honest assessment — the good and the not-so-good.
Zero maintenance: The biggest selling point. Porcelain doesn't need sealing, oiling or any special cleaning products. A regular hose down keeps it looking new. Compared to natural stone (seal every 3–5 years), this is a genuine advantage.
Consistent appearance: Unlike natural stone, porcelain has a consistent colour and texture. If you want a very uniform, clean look, porcelain delivers it reliably.
UV and stain resistant: Porcelain doesn't fade in the sun and doesn't stain from pool chemicals, wine or food. Natural stone can stain if not sealed.
Large format options: 600×600mm, 600×900mm and even 900×900mm tiles are available, giving outdoor areas a contemporary large-format look.
Heat retention: Light-coloured porcelain tiles can get very hot underfoot in direct Melbourne summer sun — sometimes uncomfortably so. This is the most common complaint we hear. For north-facing patios in full sun, consider a textured lighter-coloured tile or add shade.
Installation requires expertise: Porcelain has zero flex tolerance — even minor movement in the base cracks tiles. The installation must use a full mortar bed (not sand), professional outdoor adhesive, and properly spaced expansion joints. Poor installation = cracked tiles within a year.
Cost: At $130–$210/m², porcelain is more expensive than brick pavers or concrete. The zero-maintenance benefit partially offsets this over time.
Harder to repair: If a tile cracks (usually from poor base preparation), matching the tile exactly years later can be difficult. Natural stone and brick pavers are easier to patch.
Porcelain is an excellent choice for covered or semi-covered alfresco areas where heat isn't an issue, or for homeowners who genuinely want zero maintenance. For fully exposed north-facing patios in Melbourne summer, natural stone or brick pavers handle the heat better. The key is professional installation — poor porcelain installation fails quickly.
