You need a new driveway. You've got two choices: concrete (pour it and forget it) or paving (brick, clay, or bluestone). Everyone says concrete is cheaper — but is it really? When you factor in how long each lasts, what repairs cost, and what adds more value to your Melbourne home, the answer might surprise you.
I'm Antonio. I've installed hundreds of driveways across Melbourne — from Clayton to Cranbourne, Glen Waverley to Brighton. Here's the real breakdown of what each option actually costs you.
| Driveway Type | Price per m² | Standard 45 m² Driveway |
|---|---|---|
| Plain grey concrete | $80–$110 | $3,600–$4,950 |
| Exposed aggregate concrete | $130–$180 | $5,850–$8,100 |
| Coloured / stencilled concrete | $120–$160 | $5,400–$7,200 |
| Concrete pavers (standard) | $85–$120 | $3,825–$5,400 |
| Clay brick pavers | $95–$150 | $4,275–$6,750 |
| Heritage clay brick (premium) | $140–$200 | $6,300–$9,000 |
Notice something? Standard concrete pavers and plain concrete are almost the same price. The "concrete is cheaper" argument only applies to the most basic grey slab — and even then, the saving is small.
All prices above include: site inspection, excavation to correct depth (150–200mm for driveways), removal of existing surface if needed, supply and compaction of road base, edge restraints, sand bedding, the pavers or concrete pour, compaction, joint sand, and site clean-up. These are the real prices we quote and deliver.
Concrete looks cheap on paper. But here's what the per-m² price doesn't tell you:
Melbourne's reactive clay soil is notorious. It swells when wet, shrinks when dry — and we get both in one week. Concrete is rigid and can't move with the soil. Even with the best reinforcement and control joints, most concrete driveways in Melbourne's south-east suburbs show cracking within 8–12 years.
Repairing concrete is expensive. You can't just "patch" a crack and have it look invisible. A proper concrete driveway repair often means cutting out sections and re-pouring — and the colour and texture will never match the original. For a 5 m² repair, expect to pay $800–$1,500. If the cracking is widespread, you're looking at a full replacement: another $4,000–$6,000.
Your driveway is where you park your car. Cars leak oil — it's a fact of life. Concrete absorbs oil and leaves permanent dark stains. You can pressure-wash, you can scrub, but the ghost of that oil drip will haunt your driveway forever. Pavers? If one gets stained, you lift it out and swap it with a paver from a less visible area (like behind the gate). Problem solved in 5 minutes.
Concrete is a solid slab — water can't go through it. Every drop of rain runs off onto your lawn, your neighbour's fence line, or your garage floor. Poorly sloped concrete driveways (and I see them all the time) create pooling water that breeds mosquitoes and damages the slab edges over time. Pavers with permeable joints let water drain through naturally — no pooling, no runoff problems.
Individual pavers sit on a flexible sand bed. When the clay soil underneath expands or contracts, pavers shift slightly as a system — they don't crack. It's the single biggest advantage of paving on Melbourne soil. I've pulled up 30-year-old paved driveways where the pavers themselves are still perfect — just need a re-sand and seal.
Damaged paver? Lift it, drop a new one in, tap it down. No jackhammers, no concrete trucks, no 7-day curing time. Your driveway is usable immediately. Over the life of your home, this alone saves thousands.
A clay brick herringbone driveway looks expensive. Because it is — in the best way. Real estate agents tell me paved driveways consistently add $10,000–$20,000 to a home's sale price in suburbs like Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, and Wheelers Hill. Buyers see paving and think "quality." They see concrete and think "standard."
Herringbone, basket weave, stretcher bond — paving patterns add architectural character. Combine charcoal pavers with a red brick border, or do a two-tone design. Concrete can be coloured and stencilled, but it never has the same texture and depth as individual pavers.
| Option A — Plain Concrete: | $90/m² × 45 = $4,050 |
| Option B — Concrete Pavers: | $100/m² × 45 = $4,500 |
| Option C — Clay Brick: | $120/m² × 45 = $5,400 |
| Difference A → B: | Just $450 more for pavers |
| Difference A → C: | $1,350 more for premium clay brick |
For just $450 extra, you get a paved driveway that: - Won't crack on Melbourne clay soil - Can be repaired paver-by-paver in minutes - Drains naturally — no pooling - Looks premium and adds $10K–$20K to your home value
The maths is pretty clear. "Saving" $450 today by choosing plain concrete could cost you $4,000–$6,000 in crack repairs or a full replacement within 10–15 years. That's not saving — that's borrowing from your future self at terrible interest.
I'm not anti-concrete. It has its place:
For your main driveway — the one you see every day, the one guests walk up, the one that greets potential buyers — go with pavers. The small upfront premium is dwarfed by the savings in repairs and the boost in property value.
If you want the absolute best: clay brick pavers in herringbone pattern. It's what I have at my own home. It's what I recommend to friends and family. It looks timeless, it handles Melbourne's crazy weather, and it'll still look great in 30 years when that concrete driveway down the street has been replaced twice.
