Octagon 'n' Dot is a heritage paving pattern dating back to Melbourne's Federation period (1890–1915). It's named after the distinctive octagonal tiles with small square "dot" pieces filling the gaps between four octagons. The pattern is typically finished with a straight border (Norwood 120mm or similar).

Our installation method uses a sand-cement base (5:1 ratio) — no gravel, no concrete — perfect for heritage applications where traditional methods matter.
Dig to 120-150mm depth. Compact the natural ground firmly.
Mix 5 parts sand to 1 part cement. Apply at 80-100mm depth. Level with screed rails. Keep mixture barely damp.
Mark the grid. Place octagons first in rows, then dots at each 4-way intersection. Border tiles go around the perimeter.
Bed each tile with a rubber mallet. Keep 2-3mm joints. Check level constantly with a straight edge.
Light pass with plate compactor (rubber pad). Sweep fine sand into joints. Light watering to settle. Repeat until joints are full.
Lightly mist the surface daily for 3 days. Keep foot traffic off for 48 hours minimum.
