Melbourne's climate — hot dry summers, cold wet winters, and reactive clay soils — means not all paving materials perform equally well. Here's an honest guide to what works best for Melbourne conditions.
Clay bricks have been used in Melbourne driveways and paths for over 100 years. They're thermally stable, don't fade significantly, and handle freeze-thaw cycles (yes, Melbourne does get frost in outer suburbs) better than most materials. They're our most popular choice and for good reason — they just work.
Victorian bluestone (basalt) is quarried locally, which means it's well-suited to our climate. It's extremely dense, doesn't absorb water easily, and is naturally slip-resistant in its split or sawn form. The only downsides are cost ($120–$215/m²) and the need to seal the surface every few years.
Plain or exposed aggregate concrete is underrated for Melbourne driveways. It handles clay soil movement reasonably well if properly jointed, costs less upfront, and requires virtually no maintenance. The key is proper control joints — concrete without adequate joints will crack randomly.
Travertine is popular for alfresco areas but needs more maintenance than bluestone or brick — it must be sealed regularly and can be damaged by pool chemicals if used around pools. We recommend travertine for covered alfresco areas rather than exposed driveways.
For a driveway: clay brick pavers in 45° herringbone — durable, looks great, repairs are easy. For an alfresco patio: sawn bluestone — elegant, slip-resistant, lasts decades. For a budget driveway: exposed aggregate concrete — honest, practical, low maintenance.
