Bluestone paving in Melbourne costs $120-$190/m² fully installed, depending on finish (sawn is cheapest, thermal is premium) and site conditions. A typical 50m² driveway ranges $6,000-$7,500. Includes excavation, crushed rock base, bluestone supply, cutting, laying, and sealing.
Sawn bluestone is best for pool surrounds — naturally textured, non-slip surface that stays cooler than concrete and meets Australian pool safety standards. Thermal also works but costs 20-30% more. Avoid honed near pools as it gets slippery when wet.
Bluestone naturally weathers to a slightly lighter grey over 1-2 years, but does NOT fade to brown like some sandstones. Many clients prefer the weathered look. Sealing every 3-5 years maintains the original rich blue-grey and protects against staining.
A standard 50m² bluestone driveway takes 5-7 working days: 1-2 days excavation/base, 3-4 days cutting/laying, 1 day sealing. Larger projects with curves, steps, or patterns may take 2-3 weeks. Weather permitting — we pause during heavy rain.
