Antonio completed our bluestone paving in Hampton and the result is outstanding. The levels, drainage and finishing details are flawless. Highly recommended for high-end paving.
We had a fairly complicated drainage issue on the site, but Antonio came up with a solution and executed it perfectly. The workmanship was top quality, and there were no unexpected surprises along the way.
Antonio runs a very professional small business. Friendly, punctual and hard working. Built 2 retaining walls and remodelled our driveway paving. Would use Antonio's service again.
Antonio and his colleague did a great job with our backyard brick laying. Easy to deal with, on time and professional.
Antonio just completed some brick paving alongside our front fence. The paving looks fabulous and was completed in 2 days. He was reliable and the work was completed to a high standard.
Antonio cleared out our small backyard, laid some pavers and built a step around our existing deck. He was quick to respond, well priced, and was happy to change and vary the scope of works as needed.
Canterbury is one of Melbourne's most established suburbs, with grand Victorian, Edwardian and interwar homes on wide, tree-lined streets. Paving here must suit the architecture and the streetscape.
Soldier-course borders, neat cuts at verandahs and steps, and patterns suited to the era of the house are what make new paving look like it has always been there. We set these out before any laying starts.
We record the existing layout, lift the old path carefully (keeping sound bricks or stone), check and repair drains, excavate and compact a new base, set edges and levels, then relay or lay new material in a pattern that suits the house.
Red and recycled brick, bluestone and sandstone-tone pavers suit Canterbury's period homes; travertine and bluestone suit rear terraces and pools.
Many Canterbury projects involve architects and builders. We work from drawings and coordinate with the construction program so paving goes in at the right stage and isn't damaged by later trades.
Canterbury is in the City of Boroondara, and much of it is covered by heritage overlays. Visible changes at the front may need a planning permit. Any change to the vehicle crossing between the footpath and the road needs a council permit, and new stormwater must connect to a legal point of discharge — we plan both on the first site visit. As a guide (inc GST): a 15m² bluestone entry is about $2,850–$4,500 and a 30m² recycled brick driveway section about $5,100–$8,100.
Around Maling Road and Canterbury station, homes are closely set with formal gardens; toward the Balwyn border, blocks are larger with pools and terraces. Antonio brings samples and oversees every job himself.
Canterbury (3126) is in the City of Boroondara. The jobs we quote most here are heritage front paths and entries, driveways and rear terraces. The ground is mostly reactive clay, so a deep, compacted crushed-rock base and planned falls are non-negotiable. Every quote is free, written and fixed after Antonio has measured up on site.
Canterbury is one of Melbourne's most established suburbs, with grand Victorian, Edwardian and interwar homes on wide, tree-lined streets. Sawn bluestone entries and steps are traditional here, and travertine suits formal rear gardens. For Canterbury homes we often combine the two: bluestone steps, edges and pool coping with a travertine terrace, which keeps the look calm and consistent. Bluestone brings a dark, crisp edge that suits both period and modern homes, while travertine's warm cream tones stay comfortable underfoot on hot days. We bring real samples to the site visit, so you can see the colour against your bricks and render before you decide. We seal natural stone after laying so oil, wine and leaf stains wipe off, and we'll tell you when it needs resealing. The price is fixed and written after a free site visit. Bluestone paving is $190–$300/m² and travertine $180–$280/m² including GST, fully installed with excavation, base and clean-up. See our bluestone and travertine pages for finishes and photos.
Much of Canterbury is under heritage controls, and its big gardens and trees make permeable paving a good fit. Water soaks in where it falls instead of running off the driveway. Permeable pavers have small gaps filled with clean aggregate; water drains through them into a stone base below and soaks away slowly into the ground. In the City of Boroondara, a new or widened vehicle crossing needs a council permit, and stormwater from the driveway must go to the legal point of discharge that council sets for your property. For new homes and units, Victorian planning rules also expect at least 20% of the site to be left permeable, and permeable pavers can help meet that. On clay we lay a deeper open-graded base that stores rain and releases it slowly, with an overflow to the drain for heavy storms. Keep the joints topped up with the right aggregate and sweep leaves off in autumn so the surface keeps draining. Permeable paving is $150–$220/m² including GST, fully installed with the open-graded base. Read more about permeable paving in Melbourne.
Mature trees in Canterbury gardens often lift old brick and bluestone paths. We lift the affected section, protect the tree where possible and re-lay the original pavers. Typical repairs include re-levelling trip hazards, re-sanding weedy joints, swapping cracked pavers and rebuilding dips in driveways. Most repairs reuse your existing pavers, so the fixed area matches the rest; any broken pavers are replaced with the closest match we can find. If you notice a dip, a rocking paver or water sitting on the paving after rain, get it looked at early — a small repair in Canterbury costs far less than a large one once the base has washed out. Every repair comes with a 1-year workmanship warranty, written into your quote. Re-laying existing pavers costs $90–$150/m² including GST, with a $1,000 minimum job — usually much less than new paving, because your existing pavers are reused. Brick paving has been part of Canterbury streets for generations — clay pavers in herringbone, basketweave or stretcher bond for paths, courtyards and driveways. Most of Canterbury is on reactive clay that swells in winter and shrinks in summer, so the base depth and compaction make or break the job. We lay brick on a compacted crushed-rock base with firm edges and finish the joints with polymeric sand, which sets firm and keeps weeds out. Brick paving is $150–$250/m² and recycled brick $170–$270/m² including GST. See brick paving.
Canterbury is one of Melbourne's most established suburbs, with Victorian, Edwardian and interwar homes on wide, tree-lined streets. Much of the suburb is covered by heritage overlays managed by the City of Boroondara, so front paving should suit the house and streetscape, and some changes need a permit.
For Canterbury homes we often lay bluestone entries and steps, brick or recycled brick paths in traditional patterns, and borders that follow the lines of the garden. At the back, large gardens suit generous travertine terraces, porcelain alfresco areas and pool surrounds, often with bluestone coping or edging for contrast.
Big gardens and mature trees are part of Canterbury's character. Before excavating we check where roots run, and near large trees we use a deeper base, careful edging or permeable paving so the tree and the paving can both do well. We also check older drains while the ground is open and set falls so rain runs away from the house.
Most paving jobs in Canterbury cost $150–$300/m² including GST, depending on material — brick from $150/m², bluestone from $190/m² and pool paving from $200/m². Every quote is free and provided in writing after an on-site measure-up.
Yes — we match materials and patterns to the era of the house and keep sound original materials wherever possible.
In a heritage overlay, visible front changes may need one. Check with Boroondara Council; we can help with the details.
Yes, where they're sound — we lift, clean and relay them on a new base.
