Two of the most popular natural stone choices for Melbourne outdoor areas — bluestone and travertine — are quite different in character, cost and maintenance requirements. Here's an honest comparison.
Bluestone is dark grey with subtle variation — formal, elegant, suits both contemporary and heritage Melbourne homes. It gets darker when wet, which some homeowners love and others find unexpected.
Travertine is warm cream/beige with natural pitting and variation — gives spaces a warm Mediterranean feel. Stays a consistent warm tone wet or dry.
Neither is objectively "better" — it comes down to your home's style. Modern homes with dark fencing often suit bluestone. Homes with render or warm-tone brick often suit travertine better.
Bluestone is a basalt — extremely dense, virtually indestructible. It handles Melbourne's temperature extremes (frost in outer suburbs, 40°C summers) without issue. It's been used in Melbourne's streets for over 150 years for good reason.
Travertine is a limestone — softer and more porous. In Melbourne's climate it performs well in sheltered areas (covered alfresco, internal courtyards) but can deteriorate faster in fully exposed north-facing areas subjected to direct sun and heavy rain cycles.

Bluestone: Seal every 5–7 years. pH-neutral cleaner for routine washing. Relatively forgiving.
Travertine: Seal every 2–4 years (more porous). Must use pH-neutral cleaner — acid (including vinegar) will etch the surface. Stains more easily than bluestone. Pool chemicals can damage unsealed travertine.
