Two of the most popular natural stone choices for Melbourne outdoor areas โ bluestone and travertine โ are quite different in character, cost and maintenance requirements. Here's an honest comparison.
Bluestone is dark grey with subtle variation โ formal, elegant, suits both contemporary and heritage Melbourne homes. It gets darker when wet, which some homeowners love and others find unexpected.
Travertine is warm cream/beige with natural pitting and variation โ gives spaces a warm Mediterranean feel. Stays a consistent warm tone wet or dry.
Neither is objectively "better" โ it comes down to your home's style. Modern homes with dark fencing often suit bluestone. Homes with render or warm-tone brick often suit travertine better.
Bluestone is a basalt โ extremely dense, virtually indestructible. It handles Melbourne's temperature extremes (frost in outer suburbs, 40ยฐC summers) without issue. It's been used in Melbourne's streets for over 150 years for good reason.
Travertine is a limestone โ softer and more porous. In Melbourne's climate it performs well in sheltered areas (covered alfresco, internal courtyards) but can deteriorate faster in fully exposed north-facing areas subjected to direct sun and heavy rain cycles.
Winner: Bluestone for durability in exposed Melbourne conditions.
Bluestone: Seal every 5โ7 years. pH-neutral cleaner for routine washing. Relatively forgiving.
Travertine: Seal every 2โ4 years (more porous). Must use pH-neutral cleaner โ acid (including vinegar) will etch the surface. Stains more easily than bluestone. Pool chemicals can damage unsealed travertine.
Winner: Bluestone for lower maintenance.
| Material | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Sawn Bluestone | $120โ$175/mยฒ |
| Honed Bluestone | $150โ$215/mยฒ |
| Travertine (tumbled) | $100โ$155/mยฒ |
| Travertine (honed) | $120โ$175/mยฒ |
For most Melbourne outdoor areas: sawn bluestone โ better durability, lower maintenance, suits the climate. For covered alfresco areas or where a warmer aesthetic is essential: travertine works well. Never use travertine around a pool without specific anti-slip treatment and regular sealing.
