A fire pit area works best as part of the paving plan: a level paved circle or square, a built-in or freestanding pit, and seating walls around it. We build masonry fire pits in brick, block or stone, and pave the area around them in non-combustible materials such as bluestone, brick, sandstone or porcelain.
Keep fire pits well clear of the house, fences, overhanging trees and anything combustible, and check local rules — some councils and fire danger periods restrict open fires. We use firebrick or a steel liner inside masonry pits so the heat doesn't crack the outer wall.
Sunken fire pit areas collect water, so we build in drainage beneath the pit and set the paving to fall away from it.
