Crazy paving — irregular natural stone pieces fitted together in a random pattern — creates one of the most characterful finishes available for driveways, paths and patios. But the price varies widely depending on stone type and the quality of the installation. Here's what you need to know.

The labour in crazy paving is significant — each piece is individual and must be cut, fitted, and mortared. A tight, professional crazy paving installation takes skill and time. Cheap crazy paving jobs often have wide, inconsistent joints and unstable stones. When comparing quotes, ask: "How wide will the mortar joints be?" Quality installations have joints under 30mm.
For a driveway, crazy paving needs to be on a solid mortar bed (not sand-set) with stones at least 30–40mm thick to handle vehicle loads. Thin crazy paving will crack under vehicle weight.
For garden paths, thinner stones on a sand or compacted base work fine for pedestrian traffic.
Natural stone crazy paving should be sealed every 3–5 years to protect against staining and weathering. The mortar joints may need repointing after 10–15 years. Between seal applications, an occasional pressure wash is all that's needed.
