The most important factor is slip resistance when wet. We recommend bluestone (natural slip resistance), travertine, or anti-slip porcelain. All materials should meet the R11 slip rating minimum for pool surrounds. Polished or honed finishes are not appropriate around pools without anti-slip treatment.
Yes — pool surrounds should have a minimum 1:80 fall away from the pool edge to direct water to drainage points. This prevents water pooling on the surface and reduces slip risk. We always set the correct falls as part of every pool paving job.
